a poem

A soul person—a whole person.

Brittle breath sustained by Holy Wind.

Infinity and fragility built into blood,

sent into motion with ordinary step.

Each day—pathway toward life or death.

Each moment—capacity for beauty or beast.

With fear-loitering courage,

I haul the monsters from secret shadows.

The black holes of their empty eyes

beg for submission.

I begin to understand how I assembled

these pieces in their reserved space,

tucked away in chasmic corner

beyond warmth of window’s hope.

They claim to take up all I am,

but I know their miniscule place.

Beloved and broken—I lay bare the wounds

I've let bleed over those I love.

I have held hands with darkness,

danced with destruction,

waded into waters of despair,

and hurt others beyond repair.

And even there,

You love my pieces wholly, with care.

my fun bio:

My name is Ryan Pennington. I'm an obnoxious Nebraska Husker fan (who doesn't even love corn or the color red). My favorite bands are Twenty One Pilots, Paramore, and Kings Kaleidoscope. I enjoy walking, making analog collages, playing piano, getting lost in good music, and traveling to concerts with my wife. Green is my favorite color and my tattoos prove it. 💚

my spruced up bio:

Ryan Pennington is a pastor-poet, communicator, and educator whose work explores the sacred architecture of ordinary beauty and inevitable pain. A lifelong Midwesterner, Ryan spent the first half of his life in Nebraska before settling in South Dakota, where the seasonal rhythms of the Great Plains deeply inform his writing.

He holds a B.A. in Theology from the University of Sioux Falls and an M.Div. from Kairos University (formerly Sioux Falls Seminary). After nine years in pastoral ministry, Ryan now serves within the Sioux Falls School District, maintaining a creative practice through writing poetry and prayers, creating analog collage, taking endless pictures and videos of everything beautiful, and inviting others into a more beautiful reality on social media.

His debut collection of poetry and prayer, Both And, is slated for publication in 2026.

He lives in Sioux Falls with his wife, Crystal, and their cat.
